We were sitting at dinner and the topic “when you grow up and move out” came up with Indy (because she has learned a few tricks from Calvin and Hobbes, and I joked that we should’ve saved the books for when she was old enough to move out on her own). This is what she had to say about her grand plans for that future day.
“When I grow up, the first thing I’m going to do is buy a tub of butter like Grandma has, a stick of cream cheese, and a box of ice cream sandwiches. First I’m going to eat the butter with a spoon, bite by bite, until I feel sick. Then I’m going to eat the whole block of cream cheese like it’s an ice cream sandwich, and then for dessert: ice cream sandwiches with OJ!”

The other night, I had read the same board book to Athena several times. I told her that now she could look at her book while I read my book. She seemed agreeable and continued to sit on my lap with her book. A minute later, she was sobbing. I asked her if something hurt and she pointed to the book.
“Did you pinch your finger in the book?”
“Noooo, mommy read that!”
Then just a bit ago, she was dancing around saying “potty” over and over. I got up to run with her to her potty. When we got there, she picked up a book on the floor near it and said, “Read that.” I asked her, “Did you tell me you had to go potty just to trick me into reading that to you?” She said, “Mmm hmmm!”

Orion and Athena were playing in a bubble bath when Orion suddenly asked, “Mommy, do you think Athena will turn into a boy when she grows up?” I said I didn’t think so and asked why he wondered that. “Because… her hair. Look at her hair. She has curls, boy curls!”

Today we went to a class about making challah, which is probably Indy’s favorite kind of bread. Indy told the mom who was teaching it that, “We’re trying to celebrate Hanukkah this year.” After a pause, she added, “We’re not Hanukkans, though.”
(She has been getting out 8 candles at dinner time every night since Hanukkah started and lighting the corresponding number at dinner. We also made dreidels with marshmallows, pretzel sticks, and chocolate kisses. I wouldn’t exactly call that “trying to celebrate Hanukkah,” but I guess it’s close enough for Indy!)

Orion: I’m so excited to go to Omaha. Know why?
Indy: Because it’s Thanksgiving?
Orion: No, because it’s… MEAT!
(As many of you already know, the kids recently started to eat meat sometimes.)
And later…
Jen: See how peaceful and quiet it is?
Orion: That means we need to invite some friends over!
A second later he added, “So we can make more NOISE!”

We were eating dinner, talking about going to the moon, and Orion said that there are no female astronauts. Indy quickly corrected him: “The first person on the moon was a girl named Aneila Armstronga.” (Orion responded with, “And the second one was Neil Armstrong.”)

This is what happens when one is making hot cocoa and leaves a nearly full 1-lb. bag of cocoa open on the kitchen table, and then along comes a table-climbing little sister.

Orion and I were discussing lunch and he said all he wanted was a carrot and an apple. I said he needed to eat a sandwich or something with protein, he’d already had apple and cucumber slices.
O: “Carrot is my protein. It has protein in it.”
me: “How do you know?”
O: “I know! I made it up.”
He’s at that age where he’s constantly saying something funny. He and Matt were looking at the weather radar the other day and there was heavy rain in the area, so parts of it were red. He said, “There’s lava in that rain?!”

Orion mastered riding a bike without training wheels a couple of days ago and is thrilled with this new experience. We rode on a trail with friends yesterday but cut it short because of extreme heat, so we stayed at their house for a little while. When it was time to go home, he cried because we “wasted all our time” instead of biking more. He and Matt rode to the bike store today, too.
A little while ago, long after the kids had fallen asleep, I heard someone crashing around upstairs and went to investigate. When I caught up with sleepwalking Mr. Orion and picked him up, he started crying and flailing while saying, “I wanna ride my biiiike” over and over.
